According to today’s Star Tribune, the preliminary numbers from the Minnesota Department of Public Safety show that 84 more drivers were arrested for DWI this year than last year. In 2013, 2,453 people were arrested for DWI over the Holidays but 2014 saw an increase to 2,537 DWI arrests for the same time period. The police arrested 303 people for drunk driving on the Saturday before Christmas, the most of any day during the six-week dwi campaign.
The State Patrol’s east metro district made the most arrests with 168 during the campaign. The State Patrol’s west metro district came in second with 153 arrests and the Minneapolis police made the 3rd most arrests, citing 100 DWI offenders.
In greater Minnesota, the top arresting agencies were the State Patrol’s Rochester District with 44 arrests; followed by the St. Cloud District with 43 arrests and Stearns County Sheriff’s Office with 43 arrests. Statewide numbers show that 16 drivers had a BAC level of .30 percent or higher.
But for all of 2104, the total number of drunken driving arrests fell to 24,159 from the previous year’s total of 25,719 arrests. This is the eighth straight year that the total number of DWI arrests has declined.
